Secret Service agents and a local deputy fatally shot 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin early Sunday morning after he breached a secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago armed with a shotgun and a fuel can. Martin, who had been reported missing from North Carolina, was neutralized after he ignored orders to drop his weapon and instead raised it into a firing position.
PALM BEACH, FL — A tense security breach at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort ended in gunfire early Sunday morning. At approximately 1:30 a.m. EST, 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin of Cameron, North Carolina, drove through the north gate as another vehicle was exiting the property. Martin was observed carrying a shotgun and a fuel can, prompting an immediate confrontation by two U.S. Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy.
According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the officers ordered Martin to drop the items. While he set down the gasoline canister, he allegedly “raised the shotgun to a shooting position,” leading the agents and deputy to open fire. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were in Washington, D.C., at the time of the incident and were not in any immediate danger.

FBI Leads Investigation into Motive and Profile
The FBI has taken the lead in the investigation, working to establish a psychological profile and motive for Martin, who had been reported missing by his family just days earlier. Investigators believe Martin traveled south from North Carolina and acquired the shotgun during his journey; a gun box for the weapon was later recovered from his vehicle. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the bureau is “dedicating all necessary resources” to the case.
This incident comes during a period of heightened concern over political violence in the United States, following two previous assassination attempts against Trump in 2024. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt praised the Secret Service for acting “quickly and decisively to neutralize” the threat.
Safety Tip: The speed and decisiveness of the law enforcement response at Mar-a-Lago underscore a critical principle of self-defense: the “OODA Loop” (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act). When an intruder breaches a perimeter with a visible weapon, the time for negotiation is virtually zero once they move into a “firing position.” For civilians, home defense should start with a “hardened” perimeter; reinforced gates, motion lighting, and security cameras, that provides early warning of a breach.
