How My EDC Evolved as a Parent

Before I had kids, my every day carry (EDC) setup was rather minimal. My pockets held my daily-use tools (such as a knife, flashlight, wallet and phone), while my waistband held my pistol. If something didn’t see frequent use, it didn’t make the cut. At that point, my EDC was built entirely around my own routines and what I needed to get through the day efficiently.

Everyday outings take on new weight once a child depends on you completely. Situations that may have once been minor inconveniences now demand potentially even higher levels of preparedness and responsibility.

That mindset shifted quickly once I became a parent. My EDC stopped being about just my personal needs and started becoming even more about overall preparedness and responsibility. I wasn’t just preparing for my own day anymore; I was preparing for someone else who depended on me completely. Situations that used to be minor inconveniences suddenly carried more weight, since a small problem can escalate quickly when kids are involved.

Why Preparedness Matters

Something as simple as being out longer than expected can turn into a stressful situation if you’re not prepared, as kids get hungry, tired and uncomfortable. It’s even worse, obviously, if they get hurt in any capacity.

I’ve found that having the right gear on hand often meant the difference between a smooth rest of the day and a situation spiraling into tantrums or a quick trip to the emergency room.

Items I Never Used to Carry

There are several items I never would have considered carrying before kids that are now part of my daily setup. Some are dependent on the season, such as sunscreen; others stay in the EDC rotation year-round.

Sunscreen is one of the most common items during the months we’re outside more. Being Nashville-based means that’s about eight to nine months out of the year. I used to overlook it completely, but after a few outings where we stayed outside longer than expected, I realized how important it is to have it on hand.

Snacks are another essential I learned to prioritize quickly. Through experience, I’ve seen how fast a kid’s mood can shift when hunger kicks in. Having something as simple as a granola bar or crackers available has saved more situations than I can count. Having snacks on hand as an adult isn’t so bad, either.

Wipes (basic hand and anti-bacterial) also became a staple, almost overnight. They’re one of those items you don’t fully appreciate the need for until you start carrying them regularly, and then you realize just how often they solve unexpected problems.

These are just some of the items that most people may not consider traditional EDC items, but have become critical to have on hand for me. However, as important as all of these have become to our family, the medical kit upgrades overshadow them all.

How My Medical Kit Changed

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that, before kids, carrying medical gear was not something I put much effort into. I kept a CAT tourniquet in the truck and had a few odds and ends in my range bag. Other than that, I usually didn’t have anything ready to go at a moment’s notice. Upon researching tourniquets more, I learned that certain ones, like the CAT, aren’t ideal for smaller limbs, so I’ve also started carrying a Snakestaff Systems ETQ GEN 2 and a SWAT-T.

Additionally, I carry a lot now — from various bandages to antiseptic wipes to tweezers, and child-appropriate medications. It’s always better to have something and not need it than the opposite if you’ve got the space.

Why Pocket Carry Doesn’t Cut It

With the additional gear I’ve grown to accumulate, one of the other changes I had to make was moving beyond a pocket-only setup.

I was accustomed to a simple AIWB holster and my two pockets being able to hold everything, so the thought of transitioning to a bag or sling seemed like overkill, but I realized that doing so actually made me more capable, not to mention comfortable.

I’ve tested a plethora of packs, bags, slings and fanny packs, and have found two that I gravitate towards nine out of 10 times: the Vertx Urban Ghost Sling and the Viktos Upscale 3 Slingbag. Both offer increased storage capacity and plenty of organization options, and also remain discreet to maintain a low profile.

The Mental Shift

Through making that many EDC changes, you naturally find your mindset shifting and evolving as well. I found myself thinking ahead more often, considering where we’re going, how long we’ll be out, and what might come up. In addition, you’re not just thinking about the catastrophic “what ifs”, but how to keep everyone comfortable and in good spirits all day.

Finding the Balance

One mistake I made early on was overcarrying. I started carrying too much, trying to cover every possible scenario, even the most insignificant ones. It didn’t take long to realize that this approach wasn’t sustainable. The extra weight and clutter actually made things less efficient.

Over time, I refined my setup. If I never used something (excluding certain medical gear), it got removed. If I found myself needing something repeatedly, it earned a permanent place. That process helped me find a balance between being prepared and staying practical.

EDC as a Parenting Tool

Looking back, having kids didn’t just add more items to my EDC; it completely changed how I approach it. It’s no longer just about tools or gear; it’s about capability. It’s about being able to handle problems quickly, keep your kids comfortable, and stay in control of situations.

Through my experience, that’s what EDC becomes after kids. It evolves into a system that supports your role as a parent. At that point, it’s hard to imagine going back to the way you carried before.
