A supermarket manager in Mexico leapt to action Sunday, diving into the road to save a three-year-old girl from oncoming traffic, security footage shows.
Luis Cruz, a manager at the Super King El Rey del Ahorro grocery store, sprinted after the girl who had wandered into the busy road and grabbed her while diving to the ground moments before she would have been hit by a silver minivan.
The girl had run out of the Puebla, Mexico, supermarket around 2 p.m. local time after slipping out of her mother’s grip, according to Mexican news outlet Tribuna Noticias.
The girl was initially chased by a woman, but the woman slipped and fell before she could grab the child.

Video shows Cruz quickly tackling the girl to the ground moments before a minivan crossed the lane she would have entered had Cruz not stopped her.

As car horns honk, Cruz grabs the girl, pulling her backwards as they both tumble safely to the ground in the lane closest to the store while the mini van screeches to a halt in the middle lane.
The grocery store, according to Tribuna Noticias, awarded Cruz with 20,000 Mexican pesos – roughly $1,184 – for his heroics.

Cruz also reportedly said he didn’t think before taking action, and that as a father himself he was driven by paternal action. He also, Tribuna Noticias reported, urged parents to keep a watchful eye on their children.
