Ray Laconico has released his first production collaboration with Kansept Knives, and it’s a bit of a doozy. Meet the Bison, a wild fusion of switchblade and bowie knife stylings that is also just an enormous knife.

It’s cool to see a designer try out something new, and the Bison is most certainly outside of Laconico’s usual wheelhouse. Whereas the representative Laconico pieces trend towards a beautiful simplicity, the Bison leans in the opposite direction, finding its own beauty in a maximalist, premium offering with a lot to take in, both visually and in terms of the thing’s dimensions.

There are lots of different colorations available

The blade length on the Bison is 4.25 inches, right at the uppermost edge of what we tend to see on a folding knife. The blade profile is an aggressive, attitude-suffused bowie, which by its very nature has big attitude. In other words, for anybody willing to tote around a knife of this size, the Bison should be an absolutely chore-wrecker. Its performance is underwritten by S35VN steel, a classic PM formula with balanced characteristics that make it a solid choice for big and small cutting jobs.

There’s a distinct element of the classic stiletto switchblade to the Bison’s handle, with its symmetrical crossguard and faux inlay. It’s not a perfect recreation of that handle style, as Laconico implemented a mild but tasteful curvature to make the Bison comfortable in hand – and, obviously, it is not an automatic knife, instead secured with a titanium frame lock capped by a steel interface piece. Unsurprisingly the Bison is a bit of a heavyweight, entering the ring at 6.71 oz. no matter which of the eight(!) different versions you opt for.

The Bison is out roaming the plains now.
