Investing.com – Australia stocks were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in the , and sectors led shares lower.

The best performers of the session on the were Resolute Mining Ltd (ASX:), which rose 5.77% or 0.03 points to trade at 0.55 at the close. Meanwhile, Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:) added 5.41% or 0.44 points to end at 8.57 and Woodside Energy Ltd (ASX:) was up 2.94% or 0.83 points to 29.08 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Mesoblast Ltd (ASX:), which fell 5.50% or 0.06 points to trade at 0.94 at the close. EML Payments Ltd (ASX:) declined 3.68% or 0.04 points to end at 0.92 and IGO Ltd (ASX:) was down 3.59% or 0.21 points to 5.64.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 581 to 525 and 419 ended unchanged.
Shares in Whitehaven Coal Ltd (ASX:) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 5.41% or 0.44 to 8.57.
The , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 1.68% to 11.71.
Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.01% or 0.35 to $2,338.55 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.14% or 0.12 to hit $83.50 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.24% or 0.21 to trade at $86.81 a barrel.
AUD/USD was unchanged 0.26% to 0.66, while AUD/JPY fell 0.14% to 107.39.
The US Dollar Index Futures was unchanged 0.00% at 105.59.
