If you’ve been waiting, patiently, perhaps for years, for Civivi to release a fillet knife – well, your time has come at last. Civivi is calling it the Shawka, and they naturally went all out with the mechanical flourishes.

The fillet knife is a demanding format, in the sense that it requires the blade to have very specific properties. It needs to be fairly large – larger by far than the average folding knife – and it needs to be flexible, in order to be maneuvered around delicate bones and in between the skin and meat layers of a fish. And, perhaps it goes without saying, but the steel used on a fillet knife needs not only to be durable, but resistant to stains and corrosion, given that the, um, work environment of filleting in general.

The Shawka and its sheath; how’s it going to fit in there…?

With a 5.81-inch blade, the Shawka qualifies for fillet duty dimensions. The blade shape is a classical fillet profile, although Civivi touches like the jimping and the French pull style nail mark give it a style that fits right in with the rest of the gleaming, modern Civivi lineup. Speaking of the Civivi lineup, the steel here is a recurring Civivi choice, 14C28N. While most will be familiar with this steel as an EDC user option, it makes a great pick for filleting, with its high stain resistance and good edge holding ability.

Okay, we’ve been hiding the standout feature of the Shawka until now (other than, y’know, putting it in the title): this is a folding fillet knife. The lower portion of the aluminum handle folds out, so that the large blade can be folded in and completely covered; the whole thing is then slipped into an included nylon sheath for carry. And if you’re worried about security in the open position, don’t be: there’s a liner lock in place that works just as it does on a more typically-built folder.

The Shawka is coming soon.
