FORT STEWART, GA (3-minute read) — Five U.S. soldiers were wounded during an active shooter incident late Wednesday morning at Fort Stewart in Georgia. The shooting occurred in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) area, and law enforcement responded swiftly after reports of gunfire came in at 10:56 a.m.

The military base, home to the 3rd Infantry Division, initiated a full lockdown at 11:04 a.m. to ensure the safety of personnel and residents on base. Emergency medical services arrived at the scene within minutes, treating the injured soldiers before transporting them to Winn Army Community Hospital for further care. Fortunately, none of the injuries have been reported as fatal.

Authorities apprehended the suspect at approximately 11:35 a.m., ending the immediate threat. By 12:10 p.m., the main part of Fort Stewart was cleared and the lockdown lifted, although the 2nd ABCT complex remains secured as investigators continue their work.

Increased Focus on Base Security

While the Army has not released further details about the suspect or motive, incidents like this have raised questions about internal base security protocols.

Military installations are typically gun-free zones for most personnel, with firearms regulated and restricted to armories or authorized situations. However, active shooter events can occur anywhere, and this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of situational awareness and comprehensive security training even in secure environments.

As the investigation continues, Fort Stewart officials have committed to transparency and support for the affected soldiers and their families. Community members are urged to stay informed through official military communication channels.

Safety Tip: If you are a gun owner, always secure your firearm in a locked container or safe. Never leave a loaded firearm unattended, and ensure it’s stored separately from ammunition when not in use.
