While other leaders across the globe are calling for a ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is suggesting that a military alliance between Israel and the U.S. could end the “Iranian threat.”
In his recent address to the U.S. Congress, Netanyahu said Israel and America should form a security alliance to defeat Iran, with this military alliance taking on a similar form to America’s partnership with Europe that helped defeat the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
“Now here’s my vision for the broader Middle East, it’s also shaped in part by what we saw in the aftermath of World War II, after that war, America forged a security alliance in Europe to counter the growing Soviet threat,” claimed Netanyahu.
The Israeli prime minister added that the countries at peace with Israel and other countries that “will make peace with Israel” can join the Israel-U.S. alliance.
Netanyahu, who vehemently opposes a two-state solution to peace between Israel and Palestine, told lawmakers that Israel should be given free rein to maintain “security control” over Gaza for “the foreseeable future.” (Related: Netanyahu government linked to Jewish religious movement pushing extremist doctrines.)
He insisted that Israel does not want to resettle Israelis in Gaza, but insisted that his country should have overriding security control over the region to “prevent the resurgence of terror” and to make sure that Gaza will never again pose “a threat to Israel.”
Netanyahu deflects criticisms by insisting that Israel’s survival is at risk
The address to Congress comes two months after Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court (ICC), declared that he was seeking an arrest warrant for Netanyahu.
Concerns about Netanyahu’s potential arrest were recently brought up as the Israeli Justice Ministry allegedly worried that an advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) would legitimize efforts to detain him while he was traveling abroad.
Netanyahu also discussed the ICC dilemma, cautioning in his speech at the U.S. Capitol building that should the ICC attempt to suppress Israel, the U.S. would be its next target.
Additionally, Netanyahu thanked those who “forcefully opposed the false accusations of the [International Criminal Court] and stood up for the truth.” He claimed that the lies are “not only libels, they’re downright dangerous.”
Netanyahu also claimed that the ICC is trying to hinder Israel from protecting itself against various threats. He deflected criticisms against Israel concerning its violent and destructive actions in Gaza and the West Bank by insisting that the Israeli state’s survival is at risk.
And even though Netanyahu did not directly condemn President Joe Biden, he talked about protesters who gathered on college campuses.
Aside from claiming that protesters had “poor knowledge” of the Middle East, Netanyahu said they were acting as “Iran’s useful idiots.” He also claimed that the surge in “anti-Israel protests in America” was funded by Iran.
Outside the Capitol, police used pepper spray and arrested several demonstrators who joined the protest condemning Netanyahu’s appearance, which started at the U.S. Capitol and continued as many participants moved to nearby Union Station.
