CHICAGO, IL (2-minute read) — The Cragin neighborhood on Chicago’s Northwest Side became a proving ground for self-defense early Tuesday morning. Around 2:40 a.m., a 39-year-old man was exiting his vehicle near the intersection of Montana Street and Laramie Avenue when he was ambushed by two men. One of the suspects brandished a firearm and demanded the man’s belongings, but the encounter did not go as planned for the would-be robbers.

The intended victim, a licensed concealed-carry holder, drew his own firearm and fired multiple rounds, striking one of the 23-year-old suspects in the legs. Chicago police officers arrived on the scene quickly and took both suspects into custody. The wounded suspect was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition. Area Five detectives are currently leading the investigation into the incident.

The Peril of the “Transitional Space”

This incident highlights one of the most dangerous moments for any citizen: the transition from a vehicle to a destination. Criminals often wait for individuals to be distracted, like fumbling for keys or gathering bags, to initiate an ambush. In this case, the intended victim’s ability to recognize the threat and access his tool under extreme pressure likely saved his life.

While the suspect survived, the legal outcome for the robbers is expected to be severe. The intended victim’s status as a licensed carrier ensures that his defensive actions are viewed through the lens of Illinois self-defense statutes, which generally protect those who use force to prevent an imminent threat of death or great bodily harm during a forcible felony like armed robbery.

Safety Tip: Transitional spaces, such as getting in or out of your car, are prime locations for ambushes. Always perform a 360-degree sweep of your surroundings before turning off your engine or opening your door. If you see individuals loitering near your vehicle at odd hours, do not get out; drive away and call 911. Furthermore, if you are a CCL holder, practice your “draw stroke” from a seated position or while wearing a seatbelt, as being caught inside or next to a vehicle presents unique physical obstacles during a defensive encounter.
