AUSTIN, TX (2-minute read) — A shooting in the parking lot at a busy Target store in Austin, Texas, on Monday claimed the lives of three people before police detained the suspected gunman after a car chase.

Police initially warned that the suspect, described as a White male wearing khaki shorts and a Hawaiian floral shirt, was still on the run.

During the suspect’s fleeing attempt, he reportedly carjacked two vehicles, crashing the first.

In a swift update, authorities announced that the suspect had been apprehended. Officers remain on the scene, securing evidence and interviewing witnesses as part of an ongoing investigation. The names of the victims have not yet been released, pending notification of families.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Safety Concerns

Police have not shared details about the type of firearm used or the possible motive, but such incidents highlight the unpredictable nature of public spaces and the need for both law enforcement and civilians to remain vigilant. In Texas, open and concealed carry laws allow many citizens to carry firearms, but responsible handling and situational awareness are key to preventing tragedy.

Shoppers and employees who spoke to local media described the fear and confusion in the store, with some hiding in back rooms until law enforcement gave the all-clear.

Safety Tip: If you own a firearm for self-defense, make sure it is secured in a quick-access safe when not in use. This ensures you can access it in an emergency while preventing unauthorized handling, especially by children.
