KEITHVILLE, LA (3-minute read) — A workplace confrontation in Keithville turned violent late Monday morning when a co-worker dispute ended in a shooting that authorities have determined was an act of self-defense.

Just after 11 a.m., Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the 3200 block of Stagecoach Road. Upon arrival, they learned that 41-year-old Joseph Whitaker had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. According to witnesses, Whitaker was injured during a physical confrontation with a fellow employee. He was initially taken by private vehicle to Willis Knighton South in Shreveport, then transferred to Ochsner LSU Health for further treatment. His injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.

Investigation Reveals Justified Use of Force

Detectives discovered that the situation began with a heated verbal argument between Whitaker and the other man, whose name has not been released. As the confrontation escalated, the intended victim tried to leave the scene and got into his truck. But before he could drive away, Whitaker reportedly approached the vehicle and began punching him in the head through the window.

Fearing for his safety, the man retrieved his legally carried firearm and fired two shots, hitting Whitaker. After the shooting, the intended victim briefly left but returned shortly after deputies arrived. Following a thorough investigation, law enforcement concluded that the shooting was a legitimate act of self-defense under Louisiana law. No charges were filed against the shooter.

Whitaker was later issued a court summons for simple battery while recovering at the hospital.

This incident serves as a strong reminder of the importance of situational awareness and the legal right to defend oneself in life-threatening encounters. Louisiana is a “Stand Your Ground” state, which allows individuals to use reasonable force, including deadly force, without a duty to retreat when facing a legitimate threat.

Safety Tip: Always know your state’s self-defense laws and make sure your concealed carry permit is current. Responsible firearm use includes understanding when—and when not—to use deadly force.
