SAVANNAH, GA (2-minute read) — A Saturday afternoon dispute inside a Savannah home ended with a man being shot, in what police believe was an act of self-defense.

According to the Savannah Police Department, 46-year-old Keith King was involved in a physical altercation with a woman at a residence in the 1200 block of East 71st Street around 1:50 p.m. on October 26. During the confrontation, the woman used a firearm to defend herself and shot King.

Police responding to the scene found King injured but conscious. Emergency medical personnel transported him to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

After investigating the incident, police charged King with simple assault and criminal trespass. Based on preliminary evidence, investigators believe the shooting was a justified act of self-defense.

Understanding Self-Defense and Firearm Use in the Home

Self-defense laws in Georgia generally allow individuals to use reasonable force, including deadly force, if they believe they are at imminent risk of serious injury or death. This case appears to fall within that legal framework, though the investigation is still ongoing.

While King is expected to recover, his charges indicate that authorities believe he unlawfully entered or remained on the property and initiated a violent act, prompting the homeowner to act in her own defense.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of personal safety and the importance of situational awareness, especially within one’s own home. For individuals who carry or own firearms for self-defense, proper training, understanding of local laws, and safe storage practices are essential.

Safety Tip: If you own a firearm for home defense, regularly practice using it safely and responsibly. Understand your state’s self-defense laws, and always store your firearm securely when not in use to prevent unauthorized access.
