A fatal altercation at Bella Vista Senior Housing Complex in New Haven resulted in the shooting death of a man wielding a machete. Residents are calling for enhanced security measures in light of the incident.
NEW HAVEN, CT (1-minute read) — A man was shot and killed after wielding a machete during a confrontation at the Bella Vista housing complex in New Haven, according to police reports. Officers responded to the complex on Eastern Street at around 5:30 p.m. on Friday after receiving multiple calls about a disturbance. Witnesses described the man, identified as 56-year-old John Reynolds, as behaving erratically, banging on doors, and rambling incoherently.
Reynolds, who was armed with a machete, confronted a resident, which escalated into a deadly encounter. The resident, feeling threatened, shot Reynolds, fatally wounding him. Reports from neighbors indicate that Reynolds had a history of mental health issues and may have been under the influence at the time of the incident.
The Bella Vista complex, primarily home to seniors, is typically a quiet community, making the altercation particularly shocking to its residents.
Although the complex has security, some residents feel it’s inadequate to ensure their safety. “We need better security,” one resident told local media. “It’s too easy for anyone to come and go.”
The individual responsible for the shooting has not been arrested, and police are continuing their investigation. At this time, no charges have been filed.
Safety Tip: When living in a community setting, it’s essential to stay vigilant. Report any unusual behavior to authorities, and be familiar with your complex’s security protocols to stay prepared in emergencies.
