Civivi is Wellmaxxing with Maciej Torbé

Maciej Torbé has returned to Civivi for a new folder they have dubbed the Wellmax. The Wellmax arrives for duty with a standout blade shape, full-sized ergonomics, and two-material handle construction.

Torbé has designed for Civivi before, but this is the first time in a while – in fact, some of the previous Torbé/Civivi collabs are now discontinued, while another – the Sollertia front flipper – has only been seen as a show prototype. Torbé seems to prefer tech-industrial styling on his knives, and has an obvious interest in blade shapes that defy conventional expectations while still delivering in the performance department; for a great example of this, take a gander at the Aratra, which is still available, and had major fixed blade cutting chops thanks to its futuristic cleaver-esque blade shape.

The Lexan version provides a clear window into the Wellmax’s innards

The Wellmax, as we mentioned above – and as your eyes no doubt conveyed to you at glance – is not a fixed blade, but a rugged mid-sized folder. Its blade length is 3.6 inches, and the profile is itemized on the Civivi site as a “spear point,” but that hardly does it justice. It brings the Japanese tanto to mind, with its subdued but tangible division between a primary straight edge and an up-angled secondary one. A pseudo-fuller lays just athwart the 14C28N blade’s swedge, and Torbé topped things off with an oversized thumb stud for deployment (no flipper tab on this one).

The angular handle is formed primarily of aluminum, and because this is the latest in Civivi’s now-large line of button lock models, the front and back scales are symmetrical, with matching cuts and curves (other than the cutout for the button lock, which is only on the show side). They also both have inlays made from one of two different synthetics: either polished amber Ultem, or polished clear Lexan. The sculpted stainless steel pocket clip can be swapped to either side, and, along with the rest of the package, brings the Wellmax’s final weight to 4.19 oz.

The Wellmax is available now from your friendly local Civivi shop.
