We’ve got another outdoors fixed blade from Civivi to look at today, the Carveth. The name hints at the role of this one, with a marked bent towards the needs of hunters here.
Few things say “hunting knife” more than a handsome, classically proportioned drop point, such as we have here on the Carveth. At 3.59 inches long, the edge is big enough for the (let’s be honest) gnarlier chores such a role demands: things like field dressing and general carving. The Civivi line is dominated by hard working steels, and the design team chose a classic for the Carveth: AEB-L. This user-friendly, low-fuss stainless is to this day a bit of a cult favorite, and has seen more than a little use in the custom knife scene as well; makers like Jesse Jarosz have praised its balanced qualities, and these even-headed characteristics make AEB-L a rock-solid pick for outdooors work of all kinds.
Another hunting knife indicator on the Carveth is an ergonomic feature, albeit not one on the handle (which we’ll get to in a minute). The forward jimping, out near the tip, provides necessary control over that point during the delicate process of field dressing an animal. And, as with all aspects of the Carveth, it has solid utility for chores outside of the venatorial realm, because, let’s face it, when is more control over a blade a bad thing? It’s easy to imagine the advantages it would bestow on the Carveth during, say, wood carvething.
Now on to the handle proper, there’s not a chamfer out of place on this thing. A clean, simple, intuitive mild arc shape ready for any grip you can think of, with full G-10 (or guibourtia wood, if you roll that way) scales to fill the hand. We’re not sure what the knife modding scene is like for Civivi blades, but anybody with the gumption to take a crack at knife pimping will appreciate the easy-to-access handle bolts for removing the scales. As expected, Civivi is sending the Carveth out into the world with a Kydex sheath. The knife weighs 3.73 oz.
It is hitting shelves at the end of July.
