When it comes to AR-15 magazines, Magpul’s PMAG line is about as proven as it gets. For years, the PMAG 30 GEN M2 was the standard. It’s tough, reliable, and affordable. But as with any product, there are always potential updates and enhancements to be made.

Enter the PMAG GEN M3, Magpul’s evolution of that design, promising improved compatibility, strength and performance.

I’ve spent plenty of time running both and have put more rounds through each than I can even begin to estimate. While they look relatively similar at first glance, there are a few key differences worth knowing before you stock up.

A Closer Look

Both the GEN M2 and GEN M3 share the same basic DNA. Their bodies are constructed from an impact- and crush-resistant polymer, and they feature anti-tilt followers as well as stainless steel springs for reliable feeding. They can be disassembled without tools, making maintenance simple, and come in a wide range of capacities — although the 30-round version being the most common.

Magpul nailed the formula with the GEN M2, so it didn’t reinvent the wheel with the GEN M3; it just refined it.

Key Differences

This is where the GEN M3 starts to separate itself from the GEN M2.

The first few significant differences aren’t noticeable with the naked eye; it’s the construction and compatibility.

The Springfield SA-16A2 is shown here with GEN M2 MOE (right) and GEN M3 (left) Magpul PMAG magazines.

Magpul updated the material blend in the GEN M3, making it slightly stronger and more durable. While both magazines are durable, the GEN M3 has a slight edge in extreme environments or through multiple drops.

From a compatibility perspective, the GEN M2 was designed primarily for standard AR-15 and M4 platforms, while the GEN M3 was engineered to work across a wider range of rifles, including the popular HK 416, SCAR-16, and other non-Colt-spec lowers. For most of us, especially those who run a SAINT or SAINT Victor, you’ll have no issue running either PMAG!

Here are the three PMAG generations: from left to right are GEN M2 MOE, GEN M3, and GEN M3 Window.

The GEN M3 also features subtle changes to prevent over-insertion, a problem that can cause feeding issues in certain rifles. If you run multiple AR-pattern platforms, the GEN M3 gives you more peace of mind. Not only were the internal and external geometries adjusted, but you’ll also find the addition of an over-travel stop on the spine.

Taking into account the added texturing on the front and spine of the magazine, plus the over-travel stop, the exterior feels much different on the GEN M3. The result allows for a more secure purchase when ripping your magazine out of the magwell or a mag pouch.

Magpul also redesigned the floorplate on the GEN M3, a change that has received mixed feedback. It’s slimmer and easier to fit in a variety of mag pouches, but it’s a bit harder to grab in a hurry. It’s the kind of change in detail that doesn’t seem like much until you’re working under pressure and need every advantage during reloads. I almost prefer the larger floorplate, but have not had any issues with either.

Last but certainly not least, you have the infamous paint pen dot matrix. Do I actually utilize it on all of my GEN M3 magazines? Nope. However, I prefer having them in the event you need to mark one to designate it as a range-only magazine. Just as you test your firearms, you should test all your gear regularly to ensure that any gear used for defensive purposes is in top shape.

Is the GEN M2 Doomed?

After seeing the long list of improvements made from the GEN M2, it may seem doomed. To that, I will confidently say it’s not.

All models of the Magpul PMAG magazines are widely respected for their reliability and durability in rough conditions.

Once the PMAG 30 GEN M3 magazines were released, the price of the GEN M2s dropped. While a couple of dollars per magazine doesn’t sound like much, it adds up when buying in bulk. You can often find 10-packs of GEN M2 MOE magazines for well under $100. It’s hard to beat the value.

I have upgraded any defensive-use guns to the GEN M3s, but I see myself continuing to purchase GEN M2 MOE magazines for a long time to come, with range use and training in mind.

Final Thoughts

Both the Magpul PMAG 30 GEN M2 and GEN M3 deliver the kind of reliability and performance that made the PMAG name legendary. The decision really comes down to value and versatility.

what at the differences between PMAG generations
Whichever PMAG you choose, you’ll be getting an ultra-reliable and proven AR-pattern magazine.

The GEN M2 MOE is more affordable, yet still reliable and tough. The GEN M3 is even tougher, built for broader compatibility, and features the crowd-favorite paint pen dot matrix.

You really can’t go wrong with either! Whichever you choose, you’re getting one of the most trusted AR-15 magazines in the world.
