The Brief:

Courtney Price shot Michael McDonald after he forced his way into her Palm Coast home and threatened her and her children. Despite verbal warnings, McDonald advanced on Price, prompting her to fire a single round. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office ruled the shooting a justified act of self-defense.

McDonald fled the scene but was apprehended during a felony traffic stop at a local hospital. He faces charges of burglary with assault and is being held without bond. Authorities cited the incident as a clear case of a homeowner’s right to protect their family within their residence.

PALM COAST, FL — A terrifying residential breach has concluded with a strong public vindication for a Flagler County homeowner and a severe reminder of the realities of close-quarters home defense. At approximately 1:50 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) emergency communications received a frantic 911 dispatch from a home on Big Bear Lane.

The caller, Courtney Price, calmly informed operators that she had just discharged a firearm inside her home, striking an intruder who had breached her perimeter and refused to cease his forward advance.

The Breach and the Ultimatum

According to investigative logs compiled by homicide and felony assault detectives, McDonald—an acquaintance known to the family through his sister—arrived at the property in an agitated state. He aggressively bypassed the exterior boundaries by manually forcing open the garage door, pounding heavily on the home’s window frames, and ultimately forcing his way straight through the main front entryway.

Once inside the living room, McDonald began screaming demands for immediate cash while aiming violent verbal threats directly at Price and her two young sons who were trapped in the interior room. Price retreated to access a defensive handgun, registering that this was her very first time deploying a live firearm in a real-world scenario.

Price leveled the weapon and issued clear, loud verbal commands for McDonald to immediately exit her domicile, warning him explicitly that she would fire. McDonald openly mocked the warning, shouting, “I don’t care… shoot me,” before taking an aggressive step forward to close the reactionary gap. Price fired a single round, striking McDonald cleanly in the arm and instantly terminating his forward momentum.

The AdventHealth Felony Stop

The impact of the round forced McDonald to break off his assault. He fled the interior layout, jumped into a silver Kia SUV, and sped away from the neighborhood. Arriving deputies discovered extensive blood evidence splattered across the escape path and immediately broadcast a regional alert for the suspect’s vehicle.

Moments later, tracking units located the silver Kia turning into the emergency bay at AdventHealth Palm Coast Hospital. High-risk unit elements executed a flawless felony traffic stop directly in the transit lanes, detaining McDonald without further conflict. He was treated for non-life-threatening ballistic trauma and immediately transferred into police custody.

Zero Charges for the Homeowner

FCSO Chief Deputy Joseph Barile unreservedly praised Price’s decisive actions, clarifying that her response is the absolute embodiment of why Florida’s protective frameworks are codified.

“She’s in her own home, and someone comes in uninvited, refuses to leave, advances toward her, is aggressive toward her and her kids,” Barile noted during a media briefing. “She had a right to defend herself, and she did.”

McDonald is currently being held without bond at the Flagler County inmate facility, facing heavy counts of burglary with assault. Records confirm McDonald is a persistent felon with an extensive criminal history that includes prior convictions for grand theft and commercial robbery.

Safety Tip: This engagement provides an incredible tactical case study on managing an “Aggressive Acquaintance” inside your structural perimeter. Many gun owners falsely assume that a home invasion will always be committed by a completely masked, anonymous stranger. Statistically, a massive portion of residential breaches involve estranged associates, extended relatives, or individuals driven by narcotics debts who believe they can intimidate a homeowner into compliance. Price survived because she refused to allow her personal relationship with the suspect’s family to cloud her tactical judgment. The moment an actor breaches your threshold, ignores a drawn firearm, and aggressively steps toward you, they have crossed an absolute line. For carriers, do not waste precious seconds repeating warnings once a suspect dares you to fire and advances—close the gap by anchoring your stance, orienting on center mass, and pressing the trigger until the physical threat is completely neutralized.
