James Chaney, a licensed firearm permit holder initially charged with murder in the 2024 deaths of two Hartford high school students, has been sentenced to time served after a successful self-defense claim. Prosecutors reduced the charges from murder to a misdemeanor count of second-degree breach of peace, concluding that the fatal stairwell shooting was a justified act of self-protection.

HARTFORD, CT — A legal battle that began with a double homicide charge in a Hartford stairwell has ended with a misdemeanor plea and a man’s release from custody. On Thursday, April 2, 2026, James Chaney was sentenced to 155 days in jail—the exact amount of time he had already served—following the May 4, 2024, shooting on Hendricxsen Avenue.

The incident claimed the lives of 19-year-old Lavante Brown, a student at Weaver High School, and 16-year-old Aydin Davis, a student at University High School of Science and Engineering. Both young men were found unresponsive in the stairwell of a residential building. While Chaney originally faced two counts of murder, his legal team from the Freeman Law Firm successfully argued that the state’s evidence pointed toward a clear case of self-defense.

From Murder to Misdemeanor

As the investigation progressed, prosecutors acknowledged that Chaney was a licensed gun permit holder and that the circumstances of the encounter justified the use of force. The charges were progressively reduced:

  • Initial Charges: Double Murder
  • Reduced Charges: Manslaughter and Reckless Endangerment
  • Final Plea: Second-Degree Breach of Peace (Misdemeanor)

The final sentence effectively closes a case that has heavily impacted the Hartford school community, while reaffirming the legal protections afforded to licensed citizens who use their firearms to defend their lives in “closed-quarter” environments.

Safety Tip: Stairwells are “tactical funnels” where your ability to maneuver is severely restricted. If you find yourself confronted in such a space, your “Reactionary Gap” is often reduced to just a few feet. For licensed permit holders, this case highlights the importance of maintaining a defensive mindset and understanding that “lethal force” is a tool of last resort, but one that is legally protected when an imminent threat is present in a confined area. Always ensure that if you are involved in a defensive shooting, you remain on the scene and cooperate with investigators to establish the facts of the confrontation early in the legal process.
