The Brief:

A 22-year-old man used a secondary firearm to defend himself during an armed robbery near downtown Des Moines. After a group ambushed the man in his vehicle and a 17-year-old suspect stole his primary handgun, the victim drew a backup weapon and critically wounded the teenager in a shootout.

Des Moines Police and the Polk County Attorney’s Office determined the driver acted in lawful self-defense and released him without charges. While the injured suspect remains in critical condition, authorities continue to search for the remaining accomplices involved in the late-night confrontation near Pappajohn Sculpture Park.

DES MOINES, IA — A routine evening near one of downtown Des Moines’ most popular public landmarks turned into a high-stakes tactical engagement. Shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026, multiple 911 callers reported a volley of rapid gunfire and a person down near the intersection of 14th Street and Grand Avenue, just north of the Pappajohn Sculpture Park.

Responding Des Moines Police Department (DMPD) officers located a 17-year-old male lying in the roadway suffering from multiple severe gunshot wounds. Officers immediately administered CPR and other lifesaving measures before Des Moines Fire Department EMS crews assumed care, transporting the critically injured teenager to UnityPoint Health – Methodist Medical Center.

The “Disarmed and Redepolyed” Engagement

According to DMPD detectives, the incident began when a 22-year-old man was sitting in his parked vehicle on 14th Street. A group of individuals, which included the 17-year-old suspect, approached the car and launched a coordinated, armed robbery.

During the initial asset grab, the teenage suspect managed to physically overpower the driver and stole a handgun directly from the 22-year-old’s person or immediate reach. Rather than submitting to the ambush, the driver adapted instantly, reaching for a second, concealed handgun inside the vehicle’s cabin.

A dynamic exchange of gunfire erupted between the vehicle’s interior and the exterior pavement. The 17-year-old suspect was struck multiple times during the crossfire, collapsing onto the asphalt as his accomplices fled the scene on foot.

Justified Self-Defense Ruling

Arriving officers quickly detained the 22-year-old driver and recovered both discharged firearms from the scene. However, after a thorough review of the physical evidence, vehicle ballistic entry points, and consultation with the Polk County Attorney’s Office, detectives released the driver without any criminal charges.

Authorities have confirmed that the driver was a lawful carrier and that his deployment of lethal force was a text-book, justified exercise of self-defense to preserve his life during an active felony-in-progress. The identities of all parties are currently being withheld pending the ongoing hunt for the remaining robbery accomplices.

Safety Tip: This incident provides a profound lesson in the tactical value of “Redundancy” and the reality of a weapon retention failure. Getting disarmed of your primary tool during a close-quarters ambush is a worst-case scenario, but the 2A community has long understood that “one is none, and two is one.” The driver survived this encounter because his backup system was independently accessible. For defensive carriers, if you choose to carry a secondary tool inside a vehicle, it must be staged in a position that allows for a clean draw when your primary sidearm is pinned, compromised, or stripped away.
