The Brief:

A gunfight between two individuals at a Seattle Center festival on July 26, 2026, resulted in three deaths and four injuries. The incident occurred near the International Fountain, causing a stampede as thousands of attendees fled. Innocent bystanders, including a toddler, were caught in the lethal crossfire.

Seattle Police arrested one suspect at the scene and recovered two firearms, while a second shooter remains at large. Law enforcement and medical teams coordinated a massive emergency response and evacuation. Local officials expressed grief over the tragedy as detectives continue to investigate and interview persons of interest.

SEATTLE, WA — What was supposed to be a weekend celebration of culture, food, and community at Seattle Center was abruptly shattered by a devastating shooting. Just after 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, thousands of festivalgoers packed around the area of Sue Bird Court and Thomas Street were forced to dive for cover as a sudden volley of gunfire echoed across the grounds.

Responding SPD officers, alongside emergency medical crews, flooded the sector, immediately working to extract multiple victims while initiating an emergency evacuation of the entire Seattle Center complex.

Crossfire at the Fountain

According to initial findings from homicide detectives and command staff, the shooting was not an active shooter targeting random bystanders, but rather a dynamic gunfight between two individuals who pulled weapons on each other in the middle of the festival crowd. Innocent attendees were caught directly in the lethal crossfire.

The acoustic shock of seven to eight rapid gunshots triggered an immediate stampede. Workers at food booths and festival attendees described a chaotic scene of total panic as families scattered in every direction. Several workers recounted picking up crying children and lifting them over tall security fences to help them escape the enclosed grounds.

Casualty Breakdown and Medical Triage

Emergency responders were met with a complex, multi-point casualty layout. Seattle Fire paramedics confirmed that two individuals suffered catastrophic injuries and were pronounced dead directly on the pavement.

A total of five other wounded individuals were evaluated and routed to medical facilities:

  • Harborview Medical Center: Received four patients by ambulance, including a 2-year-old boy (stable), a 39-year-old woman (stable), a 23-year-old man (stable), and a 56-year-old woman who arrived in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery. At 10:53 p.m., police confirmed that one of the adult female victims had succumbed to her injuries in the hospital, raising the death toll to three.
  • University of Washington Medical Center: A fifth gunshot victim transported themselves to the emergency room for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds.
  • On-Scene Care: A 40-year-old woman was treated for minor injuries at the scene but declined hospital transport.

Medical staff confirmed that the gunshot wounds ranged across the arm, leg, abdomen, and lower leg.

Manhunt and Official Response

A massive law enforcement response swarmed the midtown area throughout the night. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson issued a late-night statement confirming that the Washington State Patrol (WSP) SWAT team was deployed to assist SPD in securing the perimeter and tracking lead leads.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson expressed deep grief over the tragedy, emphasizing that “no one should have to weigh the risk of being shot before attending an event, gathering with friends, or experiencing their city.”

SPD command staff confirmed during a late-night press briefing that while one young suspect was tackled and taken into custody immediately by on-site officers, a second shooter is believed to have escaped into the surrounding neighborhood. Detectives recovered two handguns at the scene and are interviewing an additional person of interest, though they have not yet formally confirmed if that individual is the second shooter.

The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office expects the apprehended suspect to make an initial court appearance on Monday morning, where formal preliminary charges will be filed.

Safety Tip: This heartbreaking tragedy at Seattle Center underscores the severe, unpredictable danger of being caught in the crossfire of an outdoor crowd dispute. At packed public festivals bounded by temporary fencing, panic can quickly create lethal bottlenecks at primary exit gates. If you hear sudden gunfire in a open crowd, your immediate priority is to drop flat to the ground for 2–3 seconds to lower your profile while the initial volley takes place—standing up to run immediately makes you a moving target for stray rounds. Once you identify the direction of the noise, move low and laterally away from the threat. Look for solid structural cover like brick pillars, concrete planters, or heavy service vehicles rather than fabric vendor tents. If primary exit gates are clogged by panicked crowds, utilize perimeter fences, emergency egress gaps, or commercial service doors to break out of the hotspot immediately.
