A Garland father fatally shot an unarmed but violent carjacker on Sunday afternoon, May 3, 2026, after the suspect attempted to steal his vehicle with a family of eight still inside. Garland Police Department officials state that no charges are expected to be filed against the father, as surveillance video confirms he acted in self-defense to protect his five children and two female passengers during a prolonged struggle.

GARLAND, TX — A Sunday afternoon trip turned into a fight for survival for a North Texas family. At approximately 3:30 p.m. on May 3, 2026, Garland police responded to a chaotic series of events near Highway 66 and Dairy Road that culminated in a fatal shooting.

The incident began when an unidentified Hispanic male in a green passenger car caused a multi-vehicle crash and fled the scene on foot. Witnesses, including a nearby business manager, described the man as acting “erratically” and appearing to be “not in his right state of mind” as he moved through a gas station parking lot, forcefully pulling on car door handles.

The Struggle for the Impala

After several failed attempts to steal other cars, the suspect crossed the street to a convenience store and targeted a white Chevrolet Impala. Inside the vehicle were five children and two adult women.

Surveillance footage (below) shows the suspect approaching the driver’s side and engaging in a physical altercation with the father, who had just stepped out of the car. As the suspect forced his way into the driver’s seat and prepared to drive off with the children still inside, the father engaged in a struggle that lasted nearly a minute. After ensuring his family had scrambled out of the vehicle, the father—standing near the passenger side—fired his weapon, striking the suspect.

No Charges Expected

The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Although the suspect was found to be unarmed, police emphasized that the father had no way of knowing the man’s status during the violent encounter.

“As right now we’re looking at this as self-defense,” said Garland Police spokesperson Lt. Pedro Barineau. “It kind of all happened like really fast.” Investigators are currently working with the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the suspect and notify his next of kin.

Safety Tip: This incident is a prime example of why situational awareness is critical even in broad daylight. The suspect in this case telegraphed his intent by targeting multiple cars before reaching the family’s Impala. For those with a concealed carry permit, the “Retreat” option often disappears when children are in the vehicle; if a carjacker gains control of the steering wheel with your kids in the back, it transitions from a property crime to a kidnapping. Practicing “Emergency Egress” drills with your family—ensuring everyone knows how to unbuckle and exit away from the threat quickly—can save lives. In Texas, the law provides strong protections for those using force to prevent a kidnapping or robbery, but your primary goal is always to create enough distance for your loved ones to escape the “kill zone” before you are forced to engage.
